Ready to spring forward? When daylight saving time 2024 begins in Canada

As Canada gears up to "spring forward," daylight saving time (DST) is upon us, starting on March 10, 2024, at 2 a.m. local time. This switch, which we observe until November, means we'll enjoy longer daylight hours in the evenings, perfect for all sorts of outdoor activities. While it's a nationwide event, certain areas like Yukon, most of Saskatchewan, and some parts of Quebec, Ontario, and B.C. opt out, sticking to standard time throughout the year.

The practice of daylight saving began in Canada in 1908, with the intention of making the most out of daylight during the warmer months. The idea is to shift an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening, allowing for more leisure time after work and potentially saving on energy costs. However, the change isn't without its critics, who point out the health impacts and question the modern-day relevance of DST.

Despite losing an hour of sleep during the transition, the benefits of having extended daylight during the evening can be quite enjoyable. Whether it's for an evening stroll, a late game of soccer, or just enjoying the sunset, the extra daylight can significantly enhance our daily routines.

As the debate on the merits and drawbacks of daylight saving time continues, it's an annual reminder of the changing seasons and the warm months ahead. Whether you're a fan of DST or not, there's no denying the joy that comes with longer days and the promise of spring and summer adventures.
